SMB Lite

SMB Lite

SMB Lite is a lightweight entry in the SMB app series. Although its functionality is limited, it may be enough for some users. It also provides a convenient test of system compatibility for SMB series apps.

SMB Lite is an application for accessing and playing media files on network file servers that support the SMB protocol. SMB (also called CIFS) is the native network file sharing protocol of Microsoft Windows. Mac OS X 10.1 and later and most Linux distributions support it. SMB is also supported on a variety of other systems, including many network file storage appliances.

SMB Lite can play many MPEG, MPEG4 and Quicktime audio and video files. SMB Lite supports a maximum file size of 5 MB.

Key features:

Supports one network file server

Network status detection and auto-recovery

Netbios and DNS name resolution

Name resolution bypass

Informative status messages

Configurable file extension filtering

Automatic directory indexing

File information display

SMB Lite includes a full set of instructions and basic server setup information.

Important notes:

SMB Lite requires a WiFi connection. Carrier connections (WWAN) are not supported.

SMB Lite does not create permanent copies of files, so device storage capacity is not affected.

SMB Lite does not write to the file server, minimizing the risk of file modification or virus introduction.

SMB Lite supports Microsoft Windows 2000 and newer systems. Windows 98 and earlier systems are not supported. SMB Lite supports Samba (2.0 and newer) on Linux and other Unix systems and Mac OS X 10.1 and newer with built-in SMB support.

No playback over 3G network, no playlists

Give me that feature, and I buy right away!

I have a windows 7 ultimate box and have a lot of experience with networking. The app says connection failure: unknown error. Well, I wish I could troubleshoot it, but with an unknown error immediately as it tries, that makes it hard. Windows event log does not show anything good. Tried putting ip address as well. ***UPDATE: it failed with version1. Version 2 works great! Congrats!! Would be better if you could stream.

Works great!!!

Not sure why this app has such bad ratings. I just used it and it connected easily to my NAS. I was playing music off the server within minutes of downloading. Yes it requires some knowledge of how your network shares are organized, file structure, share name, ip address but if u know the basics it's really easy to use. Really like bought the paid app to download larger files.
